GAT-B/BET 2024 Notification: The Graduate Aptitude Test – Biotechnology (GAT-B) and the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) are national level entrance exams conducted by the National Testing Agency. These exams are held for admission to various DBT-supported postgraduate programs in biotechnology and allied areas, and for awarding the DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF) respectively.

GAT-B/BET 2024 Eligibility Criteria


Before applying for the GAT-B/BET 2024 exam, candidates must ensure that they fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • For GAT-B: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in any branch of life sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, mathematical sciences, agricultural sciences, veterinary sciences, or engineering/technology with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a recognized university/institute. Candidates appearing in the final year of their qualifying examination are also eligible to apply, provided they submit their final mark sheet at the time of counselling.
  • For BET: Candidates must have a master’s degree in any branch of life sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, mathematical sciences, agricultural sciences, veterinary sciences, or engineering/technology with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a recognized university/institute. Candidates appearing in the final year of their qualifying examination are also eligible to apply, provided they submit their final mark sheet at the time of counselling.

Application Process for GAT-B/BET 2024


The application process for GAT-B/BET 2024 is completely online and consists of the following steps:

  • Registration: Candidates have to register on the official website of DBT (https://dbt.ntaonline.in/ ) by providing their name, email ID, mobile number, and password. A confirmation link will be sent to their registered email ID, which they have to click to activate their account.
  • Filling the Application Form: Candidates have to fill the online application form by entering their personal details, academic details, exam preferences, and uploading their scanned photograph and signature. The photograph should be in JPG/JPEG format and should not exceed 50 KB in size. The signature should be in JPG/JPEG format and should not exceed 20 KB in size.
  • Payment of Application Fee: Candidates have to pay the non-refundable application fee through online mode using debit card/credit card/net banking/UPI. The application fee is Rs. 1200 for general/OBC/EWS candidates and Rs. 600 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
  • Submission of Application Form: Candidates have to submit their online application form after verifying all the details and accepting the declaration. A confirmation page will be generated, which they have to download and print for future reference.

Exam Pattern for GAT-B/BET 2024


The GAT-B/BET 2024 exam will be conducted in computer-based mode on April 25, 2024. The exam will consist of two papers: Paper I and Paper II. The duration of each paper will be three hours. The medium of instruction will be English only.

  • Paper I: This paper will be common for both GAT-B and BET candidates. It will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from general aptitude and basic science subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics/biology. Each question will carry four marks and there will be negative marking of one mark for each wrong answer. The total marks for this paper will be 400.
  • Paper II: This paper will be different for GAT-B and BET candidates. For GAT-B candidates, it will consist of 100 MCQs from biotechnology and allied areas. Each question will carry four marks and there will be negative marking of one mark for each wrong answer. The total marks for this paper will be 400. For BET candidates, it will consist of two parts: Part A and Part B.
  • Part A will consist of 50 MCQs from biotechnology and allied areas. Each question will carry three marks and there will be negative marking of one mark for each wrong answer. The total marks for this part will be 150.
  • Part B will consist of two sections: Section I and Section II. Section I will consist of five short answer questions (SAQs) from biotechnology and allied areas. Each question will carry 10 marks and there will be no negative marking. The total marks for this section will be 50. Section II will consist of one essay question from biotechnology and allied areas. The question will carry 100 marks and there will be no negative marking. The total marks for this section will be 100. The total marks for this paper will be 300.

Syllabus for GAT-B/BET 2024


The GAT-B/BET 2024 syllabus exam is based on the topics covered in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of biotechnology and allied areas. The detailed syllabus for each paper is given below:

  • Paper I: General Aptitude and Basic Science
    • General Aptitude: Logical reasoning, data interpretation, quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, and general awareness.
    • Basic Science: Physics, chemistry, mathematics/biology at the 10+2 level.
  • Paper II: Biotechnology and Allied Areas
    • For GAT-B candidates: Molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, immunology, genetics, recombinant DNA technology, plant biotechnology, animal biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics, bioprocess engineering, and biosafety and bioethics.
    • For BET candidates: Molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, immunology, genetics, recombinant DNA technology, plant biotechnology, animal biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics, bioprocess engineering, biosafety and bioethics, nanobiotechnology, stem cell biology, cancer biology, neurobiology, and drug discovery.

GAT-B/BET 2024 Admit Card


The admit card for GAT-B/BET 2024 exam will be available for download on the official website of DBT (https://dbt.ntaonline.in/ ) from April 10, 2024. Candidates have to login with their registered email ID and password to download their admit card. The admit card will contain the details of the candidate’s name, roll number, exam center, exam date, exam time, and instructions for the exam. Candidates have to carry a printout of their admit card along with a valid photo ID proof to the exam center. No candidate will be allowed to enter the exam center without their admit card and ID proof.

Result for GAT-B/BET 2024


The GAT-B/BET 2024 Result exam will be declared on the official website of DBT (https://dbt.nta.ac.in/ ) on May 15, 2024. Candidates have to login with their registered email ID and password to check their result. The result will display the candidate’s name, roll number, marks obtained in each paper, total marks, rank, category-wise cut-off marks, and qualifying status. Candidates who qualify the exam will be eligible for admission to various DBT-supported postgraduate programs in biotechnology and allied areas (for GAT-B candidates) or for awarding the DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (for BET candidates).

Counselling for GAT-B/BET 2024


The counselling for GAT-B/BET 2024 exam will be conducted by the participating institutes in online/offline mode as per their respective admission policies. The counselling schedule and procedure will be notified by the participating institutes on their official websites. Candidates who qualify the exam will have to register for counselling and fill their choices of institutes and courses as per their preference and rank. The allotment of seats will be done on the basis of the candidate’s rank, category, availability of seats, and choice filling. Candidates who are allotted a seat will have to report to the allotted institute with their original documents and pay the admission fee to confirm their admission.
